Apple AirPods Wireless Charging Case First Impressions Review
Apple’s much anticipated Wireless Charging Case for the AirPods is finally here. I just got mine this morning so here are some first impressions:
Build Quality - Good and Bad News
Good news - There’s finally an option to customise your AirPods case with laser engraving. This should solve the issue identifying whose is whose if you have multiple AirPods at home. The engraving is done elegantly in Apple’s San Francisco typeface on the front.
Bad news - The hinges are now plastic and have a bit of loose play to them. I’m sure this is pretty necessary for inductive charging, but it’s a step back if you liked to fiddle with opening and closing your AirPods case.
Wireless Charging - Works well with Qi chargers
I was initially expecting wireless charging to only work with AirPower, so the fact that it works with Qi certified charges was a pleasant surprise to me.
Qi charging is a game changer for me as I often forget to charge due to a lack of warning. Now I can just place the case on the charging pad when I get to the office and it will only get easier with AirPower.
A minor complaint I have is that the charging indicator lights only come on briefly when you place the case on a charger. I would rather have them lit whenever charging is taking place, akin to a camera charger.
Is the Wireless Charging case worth it? It depends on how invested you are with Qi charging. I personally think that the low prices of Qi chargers in 2019 offer a convenience that’s worth the initial investment.
