Lake Matheson at Dawn

New Zealand in Winter

South Island, New Zealand, July 2016.

I took an opportunity between jobs to spend a month in the South Island of New Zealand. The goal was to take my photography to another level. Even after having lived in South Africa prior to these, the views provided still blew my mind.

It takes a forty minute hike to get to this spot from the car park, a forty minute hike that can usually result in nothing if the Fox Glacier is covered up.

It was tough getting this shot. Five out of six times Mount Cook was either completely covered or exposed. You always want some clouds to make your skies and subject more visually vibrant.

The tree at Lake Wanaka is probably one of the most photographed subjects in New Zealand. I was initially concerned about not being able to find it amidst such a large lake, but it's pretty easy to find.
